Are you lost already?

It is time for the February check up. Have you made progress on your business goals and objectives for this quarter? How about your yearly goals and objectives? Feeling frustrated or have a sense of mild anxiety?

There are a number of reasons you may be feeling this way. I have met with three clients just this week that are already behind in their tasks lists and projects. It is still early in the year so there is time to get your s**t together. As yourself these questions:

  • Am I feeling tired and lacking energy? Do you need more sleep? Change your diet? Get more exercise? Organise a check-up?
  • I lack motivation and I am bored. Are you doing what you want to do? Can you delegate or outsource work that is bogging you down? In so many cases, my clients are simply working in the weeds and no on anything to do with growth, strategy and innovation. If you keep working in the weeds your business will get mowed.
  • Do I review my task list and calendar daily? If you are not doing this you are wandering lost in the jungle with no hope of escape or rescue.
  • Am I spending a big chunk of time in my email inbox? There are behavioural and technological solutions and I will share only a couple. First, do you have your email configured to filter and automatically file inbound email? Do you use automated responses? Every email software is full of configurations and tools to make your email workflows hum. If you use Microsoft Outlook you might only be using 10% of its capabilities. Get some help or do some self-learning. On the behavioural side you need the courage to limit your access to email. I recommend a quick scan every 90 minutes or twice a day depending upon your role. If you get swamped with email, I recommend a deep dive twice a week to delete, file and take action on email and achieve ‘inbox zero’.
  • Am I working hard enough? If you own or manage a business there are no shortcuts. You need to work hard and usually business owners and senior manager work long hours.
  • Do I have a plan? If you have a plan, take some time to review it and make sure it is still valid. Your plan may not be aligned to your current reality or to your goals anymore. If you do not get a feeling of excitement or motivation looking at your plan, it may be time to develop a new one.
